Laboratory Grown Diamonds

Also known as engineered diamond, man-made diamond, or synthetic diamonds –lab-grown diamonds are essentially the same as natural diamonds as they share the same chemical, physical, and optical properties.

Today, they can be easily grown in a laboratory without incurring any extra cost and causing harm to the environment.

The IGI LaboratoryGrown Diamond Report includes the standard GIA color, clarity and cut grading scales for reference purposes.

Different in Origin, Similar in Sparkle

While natural diamonds are made deep underneath the Earth’s mantle, lab-grown diamonds are grown in a lab that replicates the high pressure and temperatures needed to turn a carbon seed into a crystalline structure. The two main techniques used today are Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT).

Consumers today are becoming increasingly aware of the harmful effects that mining diamonds has on Mother Earth and society as a whole. Lab-grown diamonds are the perfect alternative as they provide the same impeccable brilliance of the real deal while being eco-friendly and conflict-free.

There are many misconceptions that lab-grown diamonds are “fake” diamonds and are of a lower quality, but that is simply not true. The start of buying a high-quality and remarkable diamond starts with proper research and education – and we want to support you in making an informed decision.

The laboratory grown diamond’s girdle is also laser inscribed with the report number as well as the words “lab grown.”

The 4Cs of Diamonds

Established and set by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) – the 4Cs is currently the world’s most recognized and respected diamond grading system that offers guidance on a diamond’s rarity and value.

Both natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are assessed using the same strict standards of the 4Cs, which are cut, colour, clarity, and carat.

If you want to pick out the best diamond – it is recommended that you find the right balance of all the elements and prioritize on the ones that matter most to you. Only an expert gemologist and well-trained eye will be able to differentiate between a real diamond and an exceptional lab-grown diamond.

At 18 KARAATS, we have readily available laboratory CVD diamonds in our showroom, ready for viewing.
